PSHE and RSE
PSHE
At Willow Brook Primary School and Nursery, we believe Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is a vital subject which is integral to children’s learning. PSHE teaching covers Relationships Education and Health Education, both of which became statutory from September 2020. It also covers Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).
PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Through our teaching we help them to understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
We ensure teaching is inclusive of all pupils and families and that lessons are delivered in a balanced, non-judgmental way. All teachers set ground rules with their class to ensure that everyone feels safe to participate and understands boundaries around behaviour and questions. Pupils’ questions will always be answered in a factual, age-appropriate way.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
RSE throughout school life aims to give children and young people essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline. It enables pupils to explore their own and others’ attitudes and values and aims to help build their self-esteem and confidence. RSE is taught in Year One, Year Five and Year Six.
Implementation
PSHE learning comes in many different forms: through whole-class teaching, group activities, individual tasks, assemblies, outside speakers, cross-curricular lessons and discrete lessons. Many sessions are discussion based with the children agreeing to ground rules to ensure participation and sharing is conducted with sensitivity and respect.
We use the Discovery Education Relationship and Health Education scheme which provides a comprehensive and progressive curriculum with topics delivered in an age appropriate way. Class teachers also adapt plans to reflect particular needs of the children in their class.
We follow the statutory guidance for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). We will always inform and consult with parents before teaching RSE via Arbor.
